Today was very exciting.  As most of you know I live in Maryland and unless you live under a rock, you know that there was an earthquake in Virginia.  Virginia is south of us, and where the earthquake epicenter was is about 2 hours and 30 minutes away.  I was at work when the quake happened and let me tell you, it was a little scary.  Mostly because I work in a grooming salon and most of our "walls" are in fact glass windows.  It's like a fishbowl, where you can watch groomers groom dogs.  Everyone who had  a dog grabbed the dog that was on there table and went outside.   After a couple minutes we all went back in the building and resumed our day.

When I got home, mom filled me in that Peanut hid under the bed from the time of the quake until I got home.  Poor dude, he must have been scared.  When I walked into my room I assessed the damage, ha ha.  There wasn't any.  My brush fell off my dresser, and a couple picture frames fell off the bookshelf.  In all seriousness though, I hope those who were closer to the epicenter are ok, and no one was seriously injured.  That includes my internet friend Shari, her husband, and their Miniature Schnauzer, Bodie.

I just finished reading Blood on the Tracks, which is a story about the great railroad strike in America.  I liked it.  I was a piece of history that doesn't get covered in history books.  So many people died fighting for what was right after the railroad lowered pay and people couldn't live off those cuts.

Check it out!

Poor mom. She is in the hospital right now with a bleeding ulcer. She takes a lot of meds. She has multiple sclerosis, arthritis and has had two strokes. I feel bad for her, but hopefully it isn't too bad and they can figure out what to do to make it easier on her with all her meds.

Fingers crossed and say a prayer.

I ordered some really cool nail polish from Sephora last week and it just came in.

I got the Blasted White, and I like it. You apply it over a nail color of your choice and as it dries it cracks. I chose to put it over Essie's nail polish called Dive Bar. It's a black with a blue green irridesance. This is my new nail look, for at least a few days.

This book took me a while to read.  Not because it was bad, it was actually quite good.  But because I have been so darn busy.

Cathy Hildebrant is an Art History professor who has published a book about Michelangelo's work.  Little does she know that there is someone who took her book literally and has recreated one of his sculptures and dedicated it to her.

This book was great.  It had suspense, and not cheesy-super-predictable-suspense either.  The ending was great!  Be sure to check it out.

It's my last week of grooming academy at Petsmart. I'm glad. I've learned a lot, but still have parts there I'm really slow. Like faces. I'm still slow when it comes to faces.

I'm sure I will get faster as time goes on.

Well after coughing for about a week I drove myself to a Righttime Medical Care. It's like an ER, without the wait. I guess you can say it's more designed for people who can't get in to see their regular doctor for things like sprains and colds.

So I get checked out, and I have an upper resporatory infection. Awesome. Now I have some antibiotics and a cough suppresant to help kick this in the but.

In other news, look what I got! Isn't it purdy?

Yesterday  I had to take Peanut to the emergency vet for Colitis. This is the second time he has had it and it can be quite upsetting to see. But I learned something new. You can give your dog Pepcid AC for an ipset stomach. Also dogs who eat a lot of grass can get colitis because they can't process the fiber.

Hopefully I can get his tummy on the straight and narrow and we can stop this. I am going to visit the holistic dog food place to pick up some probiotics for him, and hopefully that will help.

Here is a pic of Peanut patiently waiting for his test results of pancreatitis. They alway test schnauzers for it because they are prone to it.

I'm so excited. I had planted some wild flower seeds in a couple pots early in the spring. then a couple weeks ago I transplanted them to the ground. Now they are blooming, and it makes me feel really good about my planting abilities.

Have a great day everyone!

Peanut is too funny. I picked his bed up off the floor so that I could vaccuum, and he obviously thought I should have been supervised.

Good to know that at the age of 6 he still thinks I should be supervised. Ha ha.

June 6th is right around the corner and that means I am that I am that much closer to becoming a dog groomer. I start my training at Petsmart's Grooming Academy. Should be a great time, with lots to learn.

Poor Peanut!  He got so sick yesterday.  He started vomiting at 230 am and didn't stop until close to 7 am.  I took him to the vet and he is the model of perfect health, except for the upset stomach and the resulting dehydration.  Now he has some meds to take and some special food to eat for a week.  He is already feeling better.  He tried to go after my cheese I was eating.  Ha ha.

Well today I finished two books.  I'm not sure you can call them books, they were more like short stories to me.

This one was pretty interesting.  Photographs and Phantoms is a ghost story, if you can't figure that out from the title. Amy takes pictures, and strange images keep showing up in them.  So she calls on a family member to help her out.  There is also a bit of romance in this story.

I wish there was more to the story, length wise.  I wanted to keep reading, but there was nothing left to read.  Like I said, more like a short story than a book to me.

The Abandoned was the other story.  It was ok.  When it ended I was ok with it.  Ree volunteers at a Mental Hospital and the woman she watches over, passes away.  Soon she has the feeling that something is with her, but she doesn't believe in ghosts.

Sookie Stackhouse is back!  I heart Charlaine Harris and these books.  They crack me up, and give me weird dreams.

If you are a follower of the books this one won't disappoint.  Sookie is trying to figure out her feelings for Eric and comes across a family heirloom in her attic.

So it's been since April 7th that I last did a post about a book that I have read.  Why so long?  I've only been reading one book during that whole time.  Let Me In, it's a vampire book...... a very long vampire book.  Seriously this book took me forever.

Meet Oskar.  Oskar gets bullied a lot.  Oskar meets Eli.  Eli is neither boy or girl, but Eli is a vampire.  Eli helps Oskar with his bullies.  That is pretty much how the book goes.  There are some side stories in the book that go long with it, though.  Which is why it was so long.  The writer really went into depth on those side stories.

It was a good book, just super long.  And as I understand it, there is also a movie made from this book.  I don't think I will be watching the movie.

We have been having some crazy weather here in Maryland yesterday and today.  We are getting all those storms that raged through the south, spitting out tornadoes.  We have been under so many tornado warnings, that I am starting to wonder when Maryland became Kansas.

I got this pic off a local tv station's website, the red are the worst parts of the storm.

But what do you do if you have a dog that has bad anxiety during storms.  I will tell you.

Just recently I purchased an item that was the best $36 I have ever spent.  A Thundershirt for Dogs.  Peanut used to shake, whine, and pace during storms.  Now that we have the thundershirt, he calmly lays down during the storm.  He will even chew his treat like there is nothing going on.  I recommend this for everyone who has a dog with storm anxiety, it works!

I thought The Reincarnationist Series would be more than what it was. I did not like this book. It jumped around too much and I had no idea what the story revolved around or where it was going. I don' think I will be reading anymore of these books by this author.

April 4th, 2011

So last night we had a thunderstorm roll through.  It was pretty amazing.  But unfortunately Peanut doesn’t think thunderstorms are amazing, he thinks they are scary.  Good news though, I think I may have found a way to relieve Peanut’s anxiety with thunderstorms.  The Thundershirt!

Thundershirt

We have only had the thundershirt a couple days and I was still working with him to associate the thundershirt with something positive, like treats.  So I wasn’t sure the thundershirt would work at first.  But last night proved me to be wrong.  Usually Peanut shakes and looks for a place to hide during the storm.  Not this time.  After the storm started my brother grabbed Peanut’s Thundershirt from his drawer and put it on him.  He said as soon as he put the shirt on him, he stopped shaking.  After a while Peanut went and laid down on his bed, and was relaxed the entire time.  Once I got home there was still some thunder rolling through, and I decided to leave the shirt on Peanut.  He laid calmly in his bed while the thunder rolled through.

So if you want to check it out for yourself, you can go here.  It is supposed to help with all kinds of anxiety problems in dogs.

Don't Die Dragonfly was better than I was expecting it to be.  And to be honest it is more like a short story than a book, even though it has chapters and a cliffhanger at the end.

Sabine is in a new school, she just wants a normal life like every other teenager.  But Sabine has a gift, and when her gift shows her something she has to figure it out and help those around her.  Oh and still keep her gift a secret....

I must admit I really enjoyed this book. I will probably look into getting the next book in the near future.

Here is another hit ghost story from Mary Ann Winkowski. The Ice Cradle follows Anza O'Malley, a freelance book binder, as she travels to block island. There she is working on a book binding job involving the history of a ship that sank, and she encounters quite a few ghosts along the way that are from the ship sinking. Anza also has to figure out how to tell her son about his shared abilities of seeing ghosts....except he is five years old.

I love Mary Ann Winkowski and her ghost books. I can't wait for the next one. Her ghost stories aren't scary, but they are entertaining. So check it out.

March 24th 2011

I just finished reading this book and it was amazing. It's called Fireflies in December.  Such a great story about adversity and how one family went with what was right to them than be bullied by others.  I mean this sentance alone peaked my interest: "When her best friend Gemma's parents are killed in a house fire, Jessilyn Lassiter's parents take the girl in. Trouble is, the year is 1932, Gemma is black, the Lassiters are white, and they live in a small Virginia town."  I found myself in love with the main character Jessie Lynn, and really rooting for her.  I even had trouble putting the book down... and with my work schedule this week that was pretty rough.

So check it out, you won't be disappointed.  I have placed on my wish list the two other books that follow called Cottonwood Whispers and Catching Moondrops.  I can't wait to download them and read them.

Up next I am reading another Mary Ann Winkowski book, called The Ice Cradle.  So stay tuned on my review of that book.  You may remember that I read a book by her called The Book of Illumination and I wrote about it in my blog last year on March 31st, 2010.  I loved the book.  I love ghost stories, and this one was just great.  It wasn't a creepy story, but it was a great story.  So I will let you know how this one goes as well.  Have a great day everyone!!

Sometimes working in the salon can be so out of control, because some of the dogs are un-neutered, and they really need to be neutered.  They are just insane.  They bark, bite, lunge, pull, and just generally act up.  Sometimes all you need is some training classes and for your dog to be neutered or spayed and all that craziness will calm down.

I guess until some people get the idea that it is actually beneficial for your dog to be spayed/neutered, and to go through training classes, my arms will probably still look like this.

March 15th, 2011

I just finished reading this book, it's called The Family Bones.  It was an Amazon.com recommendation, and I gave it a whirl.  At first I thought it was going to be about a family's secret past.  And it kind of was...except the sci-fi part.  Aliens.

After I read that the guy was half alien, I lost my zeal for this book.  I can't help it.  I think aliens from outer space in books, and on most shows and in movies, are lame.  I guess they just that aren't believable to me.  Ghosts... now there is something believable!

All in all the plot was good, so if you want you can give it a whirl yourself.

199102_1841878854440_1464651566_1906226_3170571_n  Today I was feeling a little creative.  I decided that my pink ballet flats, which kind of look like ballet shoes, needed a little clean up and re-vamping.  So I did just that.  I applied some shoe cleaner, and got some of the dirt out of the pink satin.  Then I removed the old laces that came with them.  They looked so dirty and stringy, and it was time for them to go. I found some ribbon that I had purchased early on in the winter, that I knew I would use for something.  I just wasn’t sure for what at the time.  This is the end result!

185659_1841881214499_1464651566_1906229_5738467_n  Cute, huh?  Yup, this creative work of shoe genius was all me.

The other night I dreamed I was a dancer and had the most gorgeous legs.  And I wasn't just any dancer, I was a ballet dancer.  I was very graceful and could charm anyone I danced for.

I have never taken ballet, and I have never been to the ballet.  But I am fascinated by how they can get up on their tippy toes and twirl around.  Maybe in another life I can a graceful ballet dancer....
