September 3rd, 2010

Earlier this week I caught a documentary on Animal Planet that got me a little concerned.  It's called The Cove, and it's about dolphin hunting in Japan.  The footage was disturbing, but the news of how many dolphins that are killed for their meat was astounding.  Even more so once I learned that dolphin meat contains toxic amounts of Mercury and is often sold as whale meat in Japanese fish markets.  And then the people are eating it, not knowing what is happening and what it is they are eating.

I remember though that back in 2007 Hayden Panettiere was arrested in Tiji, Japan (where this takes place) for protesting this.  The dolphins are hearded into a cove, where the babies are seperated from their moms to be sold to places like Sea World, and attractions where you can swim with dolphins.  The remaining dolphins are then killed for their meat, and it's estimated that from Sept-Nov over 20,000 dolphins are killed.

Now I get that the fisherman in this small town know nothing more, than this dolphin hunt.  But you would think that by 2010 we (as in the human race) would have helped them come up with alternatives to hunting dolphins.  Hopefully some resolution will come from this documentary airing.

This documentary is put together very well, and I think you should take a look at it.  Watch it for yourself, and then decide what you want to do.
